Third Annual Mayor's Urban Design Awards Presented
Winners Were Announced At State Of The City Address

Four Las Vegas projects have been recognized for their community impact as part of the 2008 Mayor's Urban Design Awards. The winners were announced during Mayor Oscar B. Goodman's State of the City Address on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Historic Fifth Street School.

The awards recognize projects that cultivate walkways and streets as shared public spaces, promote walkability and safety, conserve resources and seamlessly link to their surroundings.

The 2008 MUDA winners are:

• Buildings and Their Environs: Molasky Corporate Center, 100 City Parkway,
Richard Worthington.

• Public Places: Fremont East Streetscape Improvements in the Entertainment
District, Jorge Cervantes.

• Public Art: The Ancestral Gateway, 1930 N. J. St., Dayo Adelaja, Adolfo Gonzalez,
Denise Duarte and Sylvester Collier.

• Historic Preservation: Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., Scott Adams.

"It is exciting that the city continues to gain such outstanding examples of sustainable and inspirational urban design," Mayor Goodman said. "Our vision of a culturally rich, vibrant and sustainable Las Vegas is truly coming to fruition."

A five-member volunteer committee was formed to review and rank the submissions for recommendation to Mayor Goodman, who selected the award winners. The Planning & Development Department provided the staff support to the program and its committee.

The MUDA awards are commissioned art glass pieces designed by the local Domsky Glass Studio operated by artists Barbara and Larry Domsky. Funds for the awards were provided by the Las Vegas Arts Commission.
