City of Las Vegas Circle Park

Internationally-recognized artist and sculptor Douwe Blumberg was selected to design the Las Vegas Veterans Memorial. Blumberg was also a finalist for the Ground Zero memorial in New York City.
The Las Vegas Veterans Memorial was originally planned to built in the centrally located Huntridge Circle Park. Recently City Council voted to move the memorial to Heritage Park, located near Cashman Field.
The Las Vegas Veterans Memorial Foundation, working with the City of Las Vegas Arts Commission, selected Blumberg from more than 200 artists who responded to the national request for artist qualifications. Blumberg’s design concept features haunting sculptures representing every American armed conflict. The figures will be positioned in front of granite memorial walls with narrative quotations that surround two dramatic centerpiece vignettes cast in bronze; one of three modern soldiers performing a rescue, the other of a family group looking on in anguish.

The memorial is expected to cost between $800,000 and $1.2 million; one hundred percent of funding for the construction of the project will be made through private funding and donations. The city of Las Vegas is supporting the memorial project through the donation of land; the completed memorial will be donated to the city as a public art project. Following final design review and plan completion, construction of the memorial is expected to begin in summer 2011.
